Castello dei Tre Cantoni has been identified in the sources since the 15th century as a structure with a defensive courtyard and the church of Santa Maria la Raccomandata within its walls. It played an important role in the defensive system of the County of Modica during the 16th–17th centuries, until it ceased to function after the 1693 earthquake.

The archaeological research of the NCN OPUS 22 project verifies earlier hypotheses. Radiocarbon dating and stratigraphic analysis confirm that the main phase of the castle’s construction and use falls within the second half of the 14th – first half of the 15th century, with the uncovering of an organised building workshop in Saggio 3.

    Scicli — San Matteo hill
    36.7866°N · 14.7065°E · Sicily
    Google Maps

Within this project

Research topics

The project’s key themes: site history, non-invasive survey, Saggio 3, C-14 chronology, architecture, ceramics and socio-topographical interpretations.

Site history

Historical background, written sources versus archaeological data, the Byzantine and Norman phases verified.

  Open →

Non-invasive survey

Ground-penetrating radar, magnetometry, electrical resistivity — an interactive map of results.

  Open →

Excavations — Saggio 3

Lime kiln, construction layers, a clickable stratigraphic section with hotspots.

  Open →

Chronology

An interactive timeline and 10 C-14 dates with stratigraphy and calibration.

  Open →

Architecture and building workshop

Walls, tower, lime kiln.
