The most significant discovery of the project is <strong>an organised building workshop<\/strong> \u2014 the remains of a lime kiln in Saggio 3 \u2014 demonstrating that the castle was built in a single, planned building campaign.<\/p>\n<h3>Defensive walls<\/h3>\n<p>The castle&#8217;s perimeter wall survives only in fragments. Analysis of the surviving sections shows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>North wall<\/strong> \u2014 a stone structure with lime mortar, preserved to a height of several metres. Mortar sample <code>1\/2023 (nr 1)<\/code> dated by C-14 to the first quarter of the 15th c.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wall of the lime tank<\/strong> (trench 2) \u2014 directly related to the operation of the building workshop; sample <code>C1\/2018<\/code> dated to the 14th \u2013 1st half of the 15th c.<\/li>\n<li><strong>South wall with the 2nd plaster layer<\/strong> \u2014 repair or rebuilding within the main Aragonese phase (sample <code>C4\/2018<\/code>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Tower<\/h3>\n<p>The castle tower survives in the form of foundation remains. Mortar sample <code>2\/2023 (nr 9)<\/code> dated by C-14 to <strong>397 \u00b1 20 BP<\/strong> (calibration 2\u03c3: AD 1440\u20131620), which is interpreted as <strong>a later repair phase<\/strong> or a rebuilding of the tower during the county period (15th\u201316th c.).<\/p>\n<h3>Building workshop \u2014 the lime kiln<\/h3>\n<p>The most significant architectural discovery of the project is <strong>a lime kiln<\/strong> uncovered in Saggio 3. The industrial structure was used to produce masonry mortar for the construction of the fortifications.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Location: below the existing western structures<\/li>\n<li>Stratigraphy: layer 3 as TAQ (1st half of the 15th c.); layers 4\u20138 as the use sequence (late 14th \u2013 early 15th c.)<\/li>\n<li>C-14 dating of the kiln floor (<code>C2\/2018<\/code>): 620 \u00b1 23 BP, calibration 2\u03c3: AD 1290\u20131410<\/li>\n<li>Interpretation: <strong>an organised building workshop for the construction of the castle walls<\/strong>, operating directly alongside the fortification from the last decades of the 14th century<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Conclusions<\/h3>\n<p>The combination of architectural analysis, stratigraphy and C-14 dating clearly indicates that Castello dei Tre Cantoni was built as part of <strong>a single, intensive building campaign<\/strong> in the 14th\u201315th centuries, financed and managed within the structure of the County of Modica.
