After the 1693 earthquake, the town was rebuilt in the Sicilian Baroque style and is today inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.<\/p>\n<p>The hill of <strong>San Matteo<\/strong> \u2014 which gives its name to <strong>Castelluccio<\/strong> \u2014 has served as a strategic checkpoint over the Modica valley since the early Middle Ages.
