Vessel ceramics<\/p>\n

By comparing the vessel ceramics from Altavilla Milicia with other medieval pottery assemblages from Sicily, information was obtained on their chronology and spatial connections. Thanks to this information, together with the comparison of pottery assemblages from the different chronological phases of the church, it is possible to estimate the period in which the church was built and when it ceased to be used.<\/p>\n

During all the research seasons carried out to date, a total of 24,739 fragments of vessel ceramics have been found. The strong fragmentation of the ceramic material (more than 70% of fragments were recorded with a diameter of between 2 and 5 cm) and the traces of erosion observed on some sherds make it impossible to accurately interpret technological features and reconstruct vessel forms, so that determining their chronology is sometimes altogether impossible. Only 18,482 sherds have been processed, representing ~75% of the entire assemblage.<\/p>\n

In the earliest phase, Phase I, preceding the construction of the church, the layers found by the builders were forming (SU 11; SU 16). The oldest layer associated with Phase I is layer 16, a dark brown soil lying above the bedrock, with a thickness of 10-20 cm. A layer formed as a result of rock weathering was also recorded (SU 11). It formed the substrate for the activities related to the construction of the church and the use of the cemetery. In these layers, vessel ceramics were very scarce (67 fragments) and were dated mainly to the late Roman period. They were not accompanied by animal bones or architectural remains.<\/p>\n

In the later Phase II, associated with the period of construction and use of the church, only a small amount of vessel ceramics was found (just 293 fragments, representing ~1.5% of all processed sherds), which may indicate that the church served a sacred function at that time. The character of the vessel fragments \u2013 wall thickness above 4 mm; no surface decoration; glaze only on the inner surface of the vessel; no ornament \u2013 more likely points to a utilitarian rather than a decorative function. By analogy, the oldest ceramic artefacts can be dated to the 12th-13th century ( ceramica schiarita ). In the layers of this phase, fragments of lime mortar appear for the first time.<\/p>\n

In the later Phase III, the increase in the quantity of vessel ceramics and the presence of animal bones indicate changes in the way the site was used from the late 13th-14th century onwards. The ruins of the Italo-Greek monastery adjoining the church of Santa Maria di Campogrosso to the south were inhabited and used by occasional occupants (travellers, brigands, etc.) The vessel ceramics from this period are strongly fragmented, as shown by the diameters of the surviving fragments (ranging from 1-5 cm). The largest number of vessel ceramic fragments was found in the most recent layers. The vessels are very diverse. They were fired in different atmospheres, as shown both by the variety of colours of the fresh breaks and by the manner of surface decoration of the vessels ( protomaiolica, maiolica, ceramica pisana, ceramica valenciana, ceramica con decorazione in bruno e verde ). As many as several dozen types of ornament were recorded. This is more than in the older layers, where notched ornament and painted decoration in the form of horizontal, vertical or wavy lines predominated. The diversity of the vessels is related to the fact that they appeared here rather by chance and, unlike previously, were not linked to the economy of the Italo-Greek monastery, for which many vessels were supplied from its own workshops, which was reflected in the greater uniformity of the assemblage.<\/p>\n

Coins<\/p>\n

During the excavation works, 99 coins of low denominations were found, minted in bronze or billon (low-grade silver). The oldest of the coins is dated to the first half of the 12th century, the most recent to the 17th century.<\/p>\n

The finds come from trenches located along the southern wall of the church, in which the remains of the churchyard cemetery were uncovered; from trenches located inside the building, in the main nave; and from trenches situated outside the cemetery area. Seventy-four coins are still undergoing cleaning and conservation. Their original state of preservation nevertheless made it possible to determine the general chronology of most specimens, without establishing data on the issuing authority or the years of issue.
