Of the several dozen ‘Basilian’ monasteries founded in Sicily, mainly in its eastern part, none has survived in a form dating from the Norman period (Reina 2016). Non-invasive research, carried out using several different methods — electrical resistivity, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetometry — revealed the presence of elongated bands of measurement anomalies with a regular pattern, occurring to the west and south of the church building, which may reflect the course of the remains of the walls of the former Italo-Greek monastery.

Their possible discovery through excavation would allow broader analyses of the material culture of this centre, in order to answer the question of the shape of its economic relations with its hinterland and its long-distance contacts. Since no remains of ‘Basilian’ monastic buildings of the 11th–12th centuries are known from Sicily — having generally been demolished or rebuilt — the possible discovery of the walls of the Santa Maria di Campogrosso monastery would also be of great importance for understanding the beginnings of the re-Christianisation of Sicily, which initially took place through the introduction of Italo-Greek monks and the founding of monasteries.

← Powrót do Santa Maria di Campogrosso

Santa Maria di Campogrosso · subpage Monastery Italo-Greek monasteries of this period had no spatial structure fixed by rule.
